Leana Travaglini obtained her PhD in Chemical Sciences in 2014 from the University of Rome “Sapienza”, where she worked on the synthesis and self-assembly study of amphiphilic molecules under the guidance of Andrea D'Annibale and Luciano Galantini. She then joined the group of Luisa De Cola at the Institut de Science et d'Ingénierie Supramoléculaires of the University of Strasbourg. During this period, her research focused on developing new mesoporous (organo)silica materials. Leana joined Wiley-VCH in 2018.

About her talk: What happens when a manuscript is submitted to a journal? What is the role of a scientific editor in the peer review process? What happens once a manuscript has been accepted? This presentation will try to demystify the publishing process and answer some of the questions that editors are most frequently asked by giving an overview of the professional editors’ daily work at Chemistry Europe journals.

Prof. Timothy Noël received in 2004 his MSc degree (Industrial Chemical Engineering) from the KaHo Sint-Lieven in Ghent. He then moved to Ghent University to obtain a PhD at the Laboratory for Organic and Bioorganic Synthesis (2005-2009). Next, he crossed the ocean to work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as a Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellow with Professor Stephen L. Buchwald. Returning to Europe, he became assistant professor in 2012 and associate professor in 2017 at Eindhoven University of Technology. In 2020, he was promoted to Full Professor at the University of Amsterdam where he is the Chair of Flow Chemistry. His research interests are flow chemistry, homogeneous catalysis and organic synthesis. His research on flow chemistry was recognized with several awards, including the DECHEMA award (2017), the Hoogewerff Jongerenprijs (2019) and the IUPAC-ThalesNano Flow Chemistry Award (2020). He is the editor in chief of Journal of Flow Chemistry.

Prof. Richard Hoogenboom is heading the Supramolecular Chemistry (SC) group at Ghent University that was founded based on his appointment as associate professor in 2010 (full professor since 2014). He obtained a PhD from Eindhoven University of Technology under supervision of Prof. Ulrich S. Schubert and performed postdoctoral research with Prof. Martin Möller (RWTH Aachen) and Prof. Roeland Nolte (Radboud University Nijmegen). Prof. Hoogenboom has published more than 430 refereed scientific articles and received 20,000+ citations (h-index 66) and is listed as inventor on 21 patent families. He is currently editor-in-chief for European Polymer Journal and associate editor for Australian Journal of Chemistry. Prof. Hoogenboom is the recipient of the inaugural RSC Polymer Chemistry award (2015), the PI IUPAC young investigator award (2016), the Prometheus award for research from Ghent University (2016), the ACS Macromolecules/Biomacromolecules Young Investigator award (2017) and the ACS Carl S. Marvel Creative Polymer Chemistry Award (2021). Since January 2018, Prof. Hoogenboom is also cofounder of Avroxa BVBA that commercializes poly(2-oxazoline)s as Ultroxa®.

Sebastiaan Loriaux is recruiter chemie & life sciences en werkt inmiddels bijna een jaar voor CheckMark Labrecruitment. Toch heel iets anders dan waar hij eerst voor was opgeleid in zijn hbo studie Biologie en Medisch Laboratoriumonderzoek.
Sebastiaan over zijn keuze: "Vanuit mijn opleiding ben ik opgeleid als laborant binnen de biomedische wereld en na mijn afstuderen zocht ik dus eigenlijk automatisch ook naar mijn eerste laboratoriumbaan. Ook bij CheckMark, waar ik me had ingeschreven. Toen werd ik gebeld door een van de recruiters van CheckMark. Nadat we even hadden gesproken over wat ik nu eigenlijk echt zocht, kreeg ineens de verrassende vraag: ‘heb je ook wel eens nagedacht over een functie buiten het lab? We hebben namelijk een vacature als recruiter en wellicht is dát juist wat je zoekt?’  En inderdaad, dat was eigenlijk precies wat ik zocht: een baan waarin contact met mensen, communiceren en snel schakelen belangrijk is, maar waarin ik ook mijn lab-achtergrond en kennis kan toepassen."

Gert Smans werkt sinds 2008 bij Evonik. Hij is er momenteel afdelingshoofd productie en techniek Silanen te Antwerpen. Gert startte bij Evonik in de rol van Adjunct veiligheid in de EHSQ afdeling in Antwerpen. Na anderhalf jaar werd hij assistent productie binnen de Silanen eenheid waar hij verantwoordelijk was voor een optimalisatie project om de productiehoeveelheden binnen de eenheden Silanen te verhogen. Na afronden van dit project verhuisde hij naar Duitsland om hoofd te worden van het Specialiteiten Organosilaan bedrijf in Rheinfelden (Zuid-Duitsland). Na 4 jaar actief geweest te zijn in Duitsland keerde hij terug om voor Silanen in Antwerpen een hoger 2-cijferig miljoenen project te leiden en uit te voeren. Na het succesvol afronden van dit project werd hij Afdelingshoofd productie en techniek Silanen. In deze functie is hij verantwoordelijk voor het budget van meerdere eenheden en geeft hij leiding aan meer dan 100 medewerkers.

Ellen de Brabander joined PepsiCo in 2014 as senior vice president in R&D and currently is based in Purchase, NY.

Apart from her role in PepsiCo, Ellen served until January 2018 as the interim and founding CEO of EIT Food, the largest public private consortium in Food sector and is also on several boards including the New York Academy of Sciences, ILSI Board of Trustees, Open University & Hogere Agrarische School (the Netherlands), BOM (Brabantse Ontwikkelings Maatschappij) and Sanquin Health solutions.

For the last 23 years Ellen has worked as senior executive in multinationals in various industries including pharmaceuticals, foods and beverages, coatings and life sciences and she lived and worked in 6 countries. She earned her PhD cum laude in bio-organic chemistry from Leiden University in The Netherlands and completed post-doctoral work in molecular biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with Nobel Laureate H.G. Khorana. Her research was awarded multiple times and in 2000 she received the Golden Medal from the Royal Dutch Chemical Society for being the best Dutch chemist under 40 years of age. In 2020 she was given the US Power 50 award

Joris Berding: Na het afronden van de studie Scheikunde bij Universiteit Leiden, en het voltooien van een promotie-onderzoek op het gebied van coördinatiechemie en homogene katalyse bij dezelfde universiteit, startte Joris Berding in 2009 zijn carrière als docent bij de opleiding Chemie van Hogeschool Rotterdam. Momenteel doet hij, naast het geven van theorie- en praktijklessen, als hoofddocent onderzoek naar pedagogiek en bèta-didactiek in laboratoriumonderwijs. 

Jacotte - DoediesZot - Brokken is digital storyteller en docent. In 2015 studeerde ze af als Master in de Chemie. Maar na een paar jaar jobhoppen werd duidelijk dat de chemische sector niets voor haar was. Ze volgende een postgraduaat Digital Content & Journalism en liep stage bij VRT. Daar bleef ze als freelancer plakken bij o.a. Radio 1, LangZullenWeLezen, Studio Brussel en VRT Innovatie. Intussen geeft ze ook les aan de Arteveldehogeschool in de richtingen communicatiemanagement en journalistiek. En dan hebben we het nog niet over haar viral TikToks gehad. DoediesZot, 't is niet gelogen. Wat met dat diploma chemie dan? Wel, naast dit alles is ze ook het gezicht van Weet Je Watt, een vlog over STEM, i.s.m. EOS Wetenschap, For Girls Only en de Vlaamse STEM Olympiade.
